The plastics injection molding process is integral to many of today’s mainstream manufacturing processes. Industries such as telecommunications, consumer electronics, medical devices, computers and automotive all have large, constantly increasing demands for injection molded plastic parts. The injection molding process itself is a complex mix of time, temperature and pressure variables with a multitude of manufacturing defects that can occur without the right combination of processing parameters and design components. There are thousands of different grades of commercial of plastics materials with widely varying processing characteristics and complex part and mold designs are constantly pushing the limits of the process.

Plastic Fact Sheet One
Polycarbonate (PC)
Properties: Polycarbonates are strong, stiff, hard, tough, transparent engineering thermoplastics that can maintain rigidity up to 140oC and toughness down to -20°C or special grades even lower.
Applications: In recent years Polycarbonate blends have become increasingly commercially important. PC is widely used in blends due to its excellent compatibility with a range of polymers.
Typical Applications include: Electronic and business equipment (computer parts, connectors, etc.), appliances (food processors, refrigerator drawers, etc.), transportation (head lights, tail lights, instrument panels, etc.).

Plastic Fact Sheet Two
Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE, TPR)
Properties: Flexible, clear, elastic, wear resistant and impermeable.
Applications: Soles and heels for sports shoes, hammerheads, seals, gaskets, skate board wheels, synthetic leather fabrics, and silent running gears.

Plastic Fact Sheet Three
Styrene Acrylonitrile (SAN) & Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA)
Properties: Rigid, transparent, tough, resistant to grease, stress cracking and crazing, easily processed, resistant to food stains.
Applications: Drinking tumblers, hi-fi covers, lenses, water jugs and toothbrush handles, kitchen and picnic ware, radio dials, TV set screens, washing machine trims.

The first important plastic, celluloid, was discovered (c.1869) by the American inventor John W. Hyatt and manufactured by him in 1872; it is a mixture of cellulose nitrate, camphor, and alcohol and is thermoplastic. However, plastics did not come into modern industrial use until after the production (1909) of Bakelite by the American chemist L. H. Baekeland. Bakelite, made by the polymerization of phenol and formaldehyde, is thermosetting. New uses for plastics are continually being discovered. Following World War II optical lenses, artificial eyes, and dentures of acrylic plastics, splints that X rays may pierce, nylon fibers, machine gears, fabric coatings, wall surfacing, and plastic lamination were developed. More recently a hydrophilic, or water-attracting, plastic suitable for use in non-irritating contact lenses has been developed. Among the trade names by which many plastic products are widely known are Plexiglas, Lucite, Polaroid, Cellophane, Vinylite, and Koroseal. Plastics reinforced with fiberglass are used for boats, automobile bodies, furniture, and building panels.
